Scottish and English, of uncertain origin. Rhona first arose in Scotland in late 19^th century. The English spelling appears to be more usually Rona.

These names were possibly feminine forms of Ronan or Ronald or a modified form of the Scottish island of Rona.

Rhona is also an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Raghnaid [q.v.].
