English from Greek, either from the vocabulary word for "rose" or derived from the ethnic form "woman from Rhodes", the island's name having the same vocabulary source; NT Acts 12:13-14.

The Oxford Names Companion suggest that, in the Scottish Highlands, Rhoda is a feminine form of Roderick [q.v.].
