English and occasionally German, from Old English "rich protector". An early variant was Aedmundi, c.1200.
In Ireland Edmund was sometimes interchangeable with Edward but in recent times Eamon is more commonly used for Edward.
Ned is a popular diminutive/pet name and in Ireland this is often extended to Nedeen [= "little Ned"] (Personal correspondent [MS]).
In old documents in Latin, Edmund is usually rendered as Edmondus. Searching must take account of Latin case endings. |
