Scottish, equivalent to the Gaelic Aonghas or Aonghus, "unique choice" [possibly meaning "the chosen one"], originally from Pictish Hungus.
Aeneas Aneas and Eneas, Anglicized as Angus all occur extremely rarely in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire. However Aeneas was used as a Latinised version of Angus in many old documents. Search on Aene* to take account of Latin case endings.
A correspondent [GM] reports what we take to be Angus being recorded as Anguish in several early US Census records. This might not be found by Soundex searches. |
