Scottish male and, more recently, female name. The male form is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic Aonghas as is Angus which is therefore classed as a lesser synonym.
There is no connection with the Spanish female name, Iñes although this may have influenced the increasing use of Innes as a female name.
Innes occurs quite often in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire in approximately equal numbers of male and female. |
