Ancient Greek "praiseworthy"; NT Acts 9:33-34. Now superseded, particularly in Scotland where it was once common, by Angus.
Aeneas Aneas and Eneas all occur extremely rarely in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire. However Aeneas was used as a Latinised version of Angus in many old documents. Search on Aene* to take account of Latin case endings.
GB has noted the early use of the digraph "Æ" in some Episcopal Church records in the 18th century in Banffshire, Scotland forming Æneas.
The Irish Gaelic name Eighneachàn can be Anglicized as either Aeneas or Ignatius so we have classified these two names as Lesser Synonyms of each other. |
