1. The primary origin of the given name Ena is the Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic Eithne/Aithne.
2. Ena is also an occasional spelling variation of Ina [q.v.]. For instance, a correspondent [SW] reports an ancestor, named Alexandrina, was known and recorded as Ena rather than the more usual Ina.
The ONC relates that Princess Ena, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, was baptized Victoria Eugénie Julia Ena. However it is generally thought that "Ena" was a mis-reading of Eva by the minister and the name used for her was a diminutive of Eugénie. This is a salutary example for all amateur genealogists showing how mistakes may arise even in the most documented of families! |
