Scottish, originally a pet name for Roderick, now used independently as a forename.
In Ireland Rory has been used as an Anglicized version of the Irish Gaelic RuaidhrĂ or the Scottish Gaelic Ruairidh/Ruaraidh, but without a semantic connection.
There is some indication [CT2] that Rory could also be used as a pet name for Roger/Rodger in Ireland. |
