English from Old English/Old German "shield-wolf". Introduced into Britain by the Normans.
There is a suggestion that Randolph and Ranulf are cognate or even synonymous names. The Rootsweb list of Latinised names separates them: Ranulf is Latinised to Ranulphus, and Randolph to Randulphus. The closeness of these names suggest that there may be confusion in the older records, or in the interpretation of them. |
