English, from Greek "horse lover". NT Matthew 10:3.
In old documents in Latin, the form Philipus may be used, with appropriate case endings.
A correspondent [AC2] has found several examples working with the Clan Chisholm Exchange Group of Philip and Finlay being used interchangeably in the Highlands of Scotland.
Both Philip and Finlay have been listed in various sources as Anglicized versions of the Gaelic names Fionnla/Fionnlagh, although neither the Oxford Names Companion nor Whyte have noted that these names are fully interchangeable. |
