English from Hebrew Mattathiah or Matt thiah meaning "gift of God"; NT gospels and Gospel of St Matthew.
Note: Matthew has a similar meaning to Dorothy, Dieudonne, Nathaniel, Theodore and other names.
In the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire, the spelling Mathew occurs as frequently as Matthew.
Mattheus and Matthias are Latin forms of Matthew, found in old documents with appropriate Latin case endings.
Note that Matthia is used in Latin texts for Martha but there appears to be no connection beween these male and female names.
