Anglicised form of Jeremiah from Hebrew "appointed by God"; NT Matthew 2:17; 27:9.
The short form, Jerem, occurs very rarely in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire but this would also serve for Jeremiah.
There is no commonality of derivation for the similar name, Jerome, although Hieronymus is used in old documents in Latin, with appropriate case endings, for either of them. For this reason we have classed these two names as Lesser Synonyms. Both Jeremiah and Jerome may be used as the Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic Diarmaid [q.v.]. |
