Greek for "foliage". Phillis/Phyllis was a minor character in Greek mythology. Phyllis is mainly an English name, but occurs very rarely as Phillis and Philis in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire.
Apparently not connected with Felicia [Latin feminine for "happy"], as suggested in the FreeREG list of Latin equivalents.
In old documents in Latin, the form Phillida was used, with appropriate case endings, for Phillis/Phyllis. |
