Italian, Spanish, English, Scottish and German; the feminine form of Marinus, a Latin family name from Marius.
Marina is used in Scotland as an Anglicized form of Màiri, (the Gaelic form of Mary) with the addition of the traditional Scottish feminine ending -ina. A Scottish correspondent [MA4] tells us that her name is a deliberate elision of the names of her sisters, Mary and Ina.
Also one of a large number of Dutch and Flemish variants of Maria [q.v.], derived from the Hebrew name Miriam/Mariamne and a given name in its own right. |
