Notes: |
Scandinavian derivative of Old Norse Pórr, "Thor, god of thunder".
Our of favour as a given name during the Middle Ages, Tor regained usage around 1800, either as a revival of Thor or as a short form of Tord. It is also a short form of a very large number of Scandinavian names beginning Tor- which were derived from Pórr. Some examples are given above. |
