1. English, derived from the Latin personal name Lucius, from Latin "light", via the Anglicised variant Luke which gave rise to the 12th century surname Lucas. Luke [q.v.] is now the more popular forename, especially in the US.
Note that the Gaelic spellings have accents: The Scottish is Lùcas and the Irish is Lúcás.
In old documents in Latin, Lucius, Lucas or Lucias may be used for Luke, with appropriate case endings.
