Highland Scottish, from a Greek name representing "good man".
Evander is the Anglicized version of the Scottish Gaelic Ìomhair/Ìomhar. It is also equivalent to Ivar/Iver/Ivor in the Scottish Lowlands.
Evander and Edward are both Anglicized forms of Ìomhair and are, to some extent true, synonyms. A private correspondent [WEMC] reports the case of two cousins born in the 1860s in Ross & Cromarty, Scotland, who were both named Evander at birth but in the 1881 Census were both recorded as Edward [q.v.]. |
