Notes: |
Scandinavian and German form of Emmanuel, from Hebrew "God is with us"; OT Isiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23.
A correspondent [GJ] reports that, in the early 16th century, Mane was used in the Kirk Session records of St Andrews, Scotland. We presume this to be a phonetic spelling variant of Manny [q.v.], a pet name for Emanuel/Emmanuel. |
