Duff originated partly as a transferred surname and partly as a pet-name for a number of Gaelic names containing dubh or duf(f). Some of these are listed above. It is also used as a nick-name or Tee-name [see our FAQ #13] for men with dark hair or a swarthy complexion.
Duff appears rarely but significantly in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire. |
