Dewey (male)

Can be spelt:Dewi (M)

Source(s): The Oxford Names Companion, OUP
Notes:

US English, of uncertain origin.

ONC says Dewey is possibly a respelling of Dewi, the Welsh form of David, but gives no evidence for this. We would prefer to consider it a transferred use of the English surname which was introduced by the Normans, probably from Douai in northern France.
