English and French form of the ancient Greek name Dionysius denoting a devotee of the God Dionysos.
Originally French, as Denys/Denis. Introduced into Britain by the Normans, the spelling Dennis is now more popular than Denis in English-speaking countries. There are significant occurrences of the spelling Dennis within the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire.
Dionysius was used in old documents in Latin. Search on Dionysi* to take account of Latin case endings. |
