Dan (male)

Diminutive for:Daniel (M)
Feminine form:Dana (F)

Source(s): "Scottish Forenames" - Donald Whyte, FGH, FSG
Personal communication [MH2]
Notes:

Used as a name in its own right from early Biblical times [OT Genesis 30:6] meaning "he judged " in Hebrew.  In English-speaking communities Dan is now more usually a diminutive for Daniel.

One correspondent [MH2] has reported a Donald known as "Dan" but we feel this is probably a family-based pet name and unlikely to be common.
