English of unknown origin, possibly Irish. Whyte states that Arthur 'emerged as a corrupt form of Otho in Shetland'. Chambers suggests Arthur may be from Celtic "bear", or irish Gaelic "stone", or from a Roman family name Artorius.
There are a few spelling variations in the 1841 Census for Aberdeenshire. Most will be found by searching with Arth* although some have omitted the letter "r". The most frequent is Aurther and Arther is also common.
Arcturus and Arturus were used as Latinised forms of Arthur in old documents. Search for these using Arctur* and Artur* to allow for Latin case endings. |
