Italian, particularly Sicilian. Origin uncertain: it may be from the Greek for "wheat" or from a Latin dialect word for "white". 

Although Alfio may be Anglicized as Alf or Alfie, there is no direct connection between them apart from sounding similar.  [See Alfredo.]
