The Oxford Names Companion, OUP "Scottish Forenames" - Donald Whyte, FGH, FSG
Notes:
Scottish Gaelic, from Old Celtic "sea bright".
Muriel [q.v.] and Meriel were early variants of Muireall and were revived in the 19th century but only Muriel remained popular. The Irish equivalents are Muirgheal and Muiriol.
Thanks to Donald Whyte who provided much of the initial information for this site.
