Lilian (female)

Variants:Liliana (F)
Diminutive(s):Lil (F)
Derivative(s):Lily (F)
Derivative of:Elizabeth (F)
Can be spelt:Lillian (F)

Source(s): The Oxford Names Companion, OUP
Notes:

English of uncertain origin; recorded in England in the 16th century, possibly derived from Elizabeth or from the flower "lily", the early Christian symbol for "purity".

Note that Lily as a given name was not used until the 19th century so Lily is therefore more likely to be a derivative of Lilian rather than the other way round.
