Italian and English. In the latter case Emilia was derived from the Medieval Latinate name Aemilia, from the Roman family name Aemilius, "rival". In the early 20th century it was largely superseded in English-speaking communities by Emily although its popularity is being revived .
Both Emily and Emilia were in use in Aberdeenshire in the 1841 Census, in roughly equal numbers but with many spelling variations, including a significant number of Emelia. These should be found by Soundex searching. |
