| 1. Whyte suggests this is from the Gaelic name Diorean which is possibly an Irish rendering of Dorothy. If this is so then Dorean becomes a true variant.  Alternatively derived from the Celtic for "sullen". 2. ONC considers Doreen to be an early 20th century derivative of Dora, with the addition of the Irish diminutive suffix -een.  ONC also specifies the alternative spellings. |
